An outstanding statement by Jesus (Matthew 12:31-32), (Mark 3vv28-29), (Luke 12v10) - every!
John the Baptist testified of Jesus - "... who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1v29)
St Paul testified - "... to save sinners - of whom I am the worst." (1tim1v15)
However, there is a caveat to the promise - "except blasphemy against the spirit".
So what is this 'blasphemy' and what is the work of the Holy Spirit anyway?
- From the context in which Jesus made this statement he is referring to those who 'speak evil of' the spirit. His critics could not deny the miracle, but they declared Jesus to be Satan incarnate not God incarnate.
- Grieving the Holy Spirit (Ephesian 4v30) is not the unforgivable sin. I might grieve my wife and the atmosphere at home is unpleasant - but divorce is not on the agenda!
- John the Baptist declared that Jesus would baptise with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3v11), (Mark 1v8), (Luke 3v16) (John 1v33-34). God the Father eager to give the Holy Spirit (Luke 11v13). On the day of Pentecost St Peter declared it to be the fulfillment of God's promise to pour out His Spirit (Joel 2vv28-29).
The Holy Spirit in the church / life of believer is not an option.
The Holy Spirit is dangerous - may break tradition (Numbers 11vv26-29).
God promised to answer Moses' prayer (Joel 2vv28-29).
Peter declared he has (Acts 2vv15-16)!
